Lebanese wary as Israel destroys Hezbollah border tunnels

Dec 14, 2018

MAYS AL-JABAL, Lebanon — As Israeli excavators dug into the rocky hills along the frontier with a Lebanese village, a crowd of young Lebanese men gathered to watch. The mood was light as the crowd observed what Israel says is a military operation — dubbed "Northern Shield" — aimed at destroying attack tunnels built by the Lebanese Hezbollah militia. The young men posed for selfies, with the Israeli crew in the background, as they burned fires and brewed tea to keep warm. But Lebanese soldiers were visibly on high alert, deploying to new camouflaged posts behind sandbags and inside abandoned...

AP PHOTOS: Urgency of climate talks seen in coal plants, ice

Dec 14, 2018

WARSAW, Poland — As politicians haggle at a U.N. climate conference in Poland over ways to limit global warming, the industries and machines powering our modern world keep spewing their pollution into the air and water. The fossil fuels extracted from beneath the earth's crust — coal, oil and gas — are transformed into the carbon dioxide that is now heating the earth faster than scientists had expected even a few years ago. The devastating wildfires, droughts, floods and hurricanes of recent months and years are intensifying the urgency of the two-week conference in Katowice, which is due to end...

Serbia talks up armed intervention as Kosovo OKs new army

Dec 14, 2018

PRISTINA, Kosovo — Serbia talked up the possibility of an armed intervention in Kosovo Friday after the parliament in Pristina overwhelmingly approved the formation of an army, with Belgrade calling the move the "most direct threat to peace and stability in the region." NATO's chief called Kosovo's move "ill-timed" and urged dialogue. The 120-seat parliament voted with all present 107 lawmakers in favor of passing three draft laws to expand an existing 4,000 Kosovo Security Force and turn it into a regular lightly armed army. Ethnic-Serb community lawmakers boycotted the vote. Serbia insists that the new army violates a U.N....

WASHINGTON — An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death of a 7-year-old migrant girl who began suffering seizures in immigration custody along the U.S.-Mexico border and spiked a high fever, officials said. The girl was found Dec. 6 near Lordsburg, New Mexico, by U.S. Border Patrol agents. She was in custody for about eight hours before she began having seizures, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials said. Emergency medical technicians discovered the girl's fever was 105.7 degrees Fahrenheit (40.9 degrees Celsius), and she was airlifted to an El Paso, Texas, hospital, where she later died. The...

The Latest: Serbia seeks urgent UN session over Kosovo army

Dec 14, 2018

PRISTINA, Kosovo — The Latest on Kosovo's vote to create an army (all times local): 2:40 p.m. Serbia's foreign minister says the country will seek an urgent session of the U.N. Security Council over Kosovo's decision to form an army. Serbia maintains the vote in Kosovo's parliament was in violation of a U.N. resolution on Kosovo brought at the end of the 1998-99 war and NATO's military intervention against Serbia. NATO bombed Serbia for 78 days in 1999 to stop its crackdown against Kosovo separatists. Kosovo declared independence in 2008, which Serbia doesn't recognize. Serbia Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic has...
