NIH-Backed Study Confirms Link Between Cell Phone Radiation and Cancer in Rats

The National Toxicology Program recently published the result of a study that found male rats exposed to the same type of radiation emitted by cell phones developed cancerous tumors at a higher-than-normal rate.

Approximately 95 percent of all U.S. adults own at least one cell phone. But unlike many other widely used consumer products, cell phones have never been subject to rigorous government safety testing. In fact, the Federal Communications Commission has not updated its cell phone radiation standards since the mid-1990s-a time when less than 10 percent of Americans used such devices.
Yet according to new research published by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), an inter-agency group under the direction of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), there is strong evidence to suggest that long-term exposure to the non-ionizing radio-frequency (RF) radiation emitted by cell phones and wireless devices is a carcinogen. NTP conducted an extensive study of 3,000 rats and mice over a two-year period. The animals were exposed to “near-field” RF radiation, which approximates the conditions of a human using a cell phone.
What researchers found was that the male rats-but not the female rats or mice-developed heart tumors at “statistically higher rates” than animals in the control group who were not exposed to near-field RF radiation. The NTP’s results mirrored those of a second study recently performed by an Italian cancer research institute, which found an increased cancer risk when male rats were exposed to far-field RF radiation, the type surrounds people every day due to widespread use of wireless devices.

Hickman said the NTP’s study should serve as a wake-up call to the consumers and the wireless industry. “This is not the first study to suggest a link between RF exposure and cancer, and it will not be the last. In fact, roughly 90 percent of the studies filed with the NIH on this subject have not only linked cell phone usage to cancer, but other potential genetic damage as well. Telecommunications companies may continue to deny that there are any health risks associated with their products, but such tactics will not keep the public from eventually learning the truth.”
Hickman added that the public debate over the connection between RF exposure and cancer will only increase in the coming months and years, as the country moves towards replacing today’s 4G wireless technology with 5G, which will potentially require the installation of millions of new short-range wireless antennas throughout the country.
